It really sounds interesting! A baby girl, who was born at a cyclone shelter at Mithakhali village in Mongla upazila on Saturday night, has been named ‘Bulbuli’.
‘Bulbul’ or ‘Bulbuli’ is a common name in Bangladesh society. But the parents of the newborn baby named their child keeping similarity with the cyclone storm codenamed as ‘Bulbul’. It was crossing the region when the baby was born.
Hanufa Begum gave birth to the baby girl at ATC Government Primary School which was turned into a shelter centre for providing shelter to the people of the coastal area.
Mongla Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Rahat Mannan said Hanufa Begum, wife of Bayezid Shikdar of Mithakhali village, gave birth to the baby safely with the help of a midwife from the upazila family planning office. “Both the baby and the mother are doing well,” he said.
The cyclonic storm ‘Bulbul’ completed crossing the West Bengal-Khulna coast near the Sundarbans around 5am on Sunday.
Around 764,000 people were evacuated from seven coastal districts to shelter centres on Saturday. The districts are Baterhat, Khulna, Satkhira, Barishal, Pirojpur, Barguna and Bhola.
Why is a cyclone codenamed?
The practice of giving names to Atlantic storms began hundreds of years back. Now it is found helpful in the quick identification of storms in warning messages because names are presumed to be far easier to remember than numbers and technical terms.
The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) maintains the rotating lists of names which are appropriate for each Tropical Cyclone basin. If a cyclone is particularly deadly or costly, then its name is retired and replaced by another one.
