Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court fixed November 28 for further hearing on the bail petitions of five senior BNP leaders including MK Anwar MP and Barrister Moudud Ahmed MP in two cases filed with Motijheel Police Station on the charge of vandalism and obstructing police when they were performing their duties and one case was filed under the Explosive Substances Act.Earlier, Judge Md Jahurul Haque heard the petitions from 10.30 am. Later at 3.30 pm, bench assistant Iftekhar Ahmad informed the media men the date for further hearing. However, the accused leaders were not produced to the court on the occasion.
Other three leaders are BNP’s Standing Committee member Barrister Rafiqul Islam Mia, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s advisor Abdul Awal Mintoo and BNP Chairperson’s Special Assistant Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas.
On behalf of defence, among others former Attorney General AJ Mohammad Ali, Supreme Court Bar Association’s President Joynul Abedin, Supreme Court Bar Association Secretary Barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokon MP and former President of Dhaka Bar Association Sanaullah Mia moved the bail petitions.
On Nov 14, a court of Dhaka granted police eight days to interrogate the five leaders, including three Standing Committee members in two cases.
On Sunday, following a writ petition filed by the five BNP leaders, the High Court stayed the remand and asked the authorities concerned to sent the leaders to jail immediately. However, it allowed the investigators to interrogate the accused at the jail gate, if necessary.
Lawmakers MK Anwar and Moudud and Standing Committee member Rafiqul Islam Mia were detained from in front of Hotel Sonargaon in the capital on Nov 8. Awal Mintoo and Simul Biswas were detained outside BNP Chairperson’s Gulshan residence the following day.
The cases were filed with Motijheel Police Station on September 24 and Nov 6 respectively. – Court Correspondent
