Bangladesh to receive aid for safe ship recycling

Bangladesh will receive a grant of $15,16,275 from two international agencies for environmentally safe recycling of ships.
The aid will come from Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD) and Secretariat of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Convention (BRS) for implementation of the Safe and Environmentally Sound Ship Recycling in Bangladesh (Phase-1) Project.International Maritime Organization (IMO) in partnership with the Industries Ministry will implement the project, according to a MoU signed last week.
The MoU was signed between the Government of Bangladesh and IMO at the Economic Relations Division (ERD) in city’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar on Thursday for the grant.
ERD Additional Secretary M Asadul Islam signed the MoU on behalf of the government while Nicolaos L Charalambous on behalf of the IMO in presence of the officials of the Industries Ministry and ERD.
This is the first project in Bangladesh for development of the country’s ship recycling sector.
