BASIC Bank GM in jail

A Dhaka court has sent BASIC Bank General Manager Joynal Abedin to judicial custody in an embezzlement case.Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Emdadul Haque ordered him into jail after the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) produced Abedin on Tuesday and sought a seven-day remand to question him.The magistrate fixed Apr 11 for hearing the remand plea, ACC prosecution division official Shahidur Rahman told bdnews24.com.Abedin was arrested by an ACC team led by its Director Syed Iqbal Hossain at the capital’s Motijheel on Tuesday afternoon.

The ACC filed 56 cases between Sep 21 and 23 last year after the completion of investigation into the alleged misappropriation of Tk 45 billion in loans from the bank through forgery.In the cases started with Gulshan, Paltan and Motijheel police stations, the ACC claimed that Tk 20.09 billion was embezzled.Of the 120 accused in the cases, 27 are BASIC Bank officials.Joynal Abedin has been accused in several of these cases.The ACC had earlier arrested two deputy managing directors, Fazlus Sobhan and Md Selim, and Deputy General Manager Shiper Ahmed, Assistant General Manager Ekramul Bari and three businessmen in connection with the embezzlement.
