‘BCL boys’ attack Chittagong magistrate

Activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) reportedly attacked a mobile court of Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) while conducting a drive to dismantle illegal billboards at GEC intersection in the city on Wednesday noon.Witnesses said the mobile court, led by CCC executive magistrate Nazia Shirin, conducted the drive in the area around noon to pull down illegal billboards erected on footpaths.
Soon, the BCL activists from MES College appeared on the scene and engaged in an altercation with the mobile court members.
At one stage, the BCL men went on the rampage vandalising four CCC vehicles and manhandling some of its workers engaged in the drive.
Traffic came to a complete halt in the area following the BCL men’s rampage.
On information, police rushed in and brought the situation under control.
Magistrate Nazia said some boys appeared from nowhere and vandalised some vehicles of the mobile court after the eviction drive began. “However, two billboards were demolished even in the face of obstruction,” she said.
CCC panel mayor Hasan Mahmud Hasni, Lalkhan Bazar Ward councillor SIF Kabir Manik and CCC secretary Shamsuddoha visited the spot after the incident.
They said those involved in the incident will be hunted down. (Source: UNB)
