Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi on Wednesday observed the Armed Forces Day paying homage to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the martyrs of the War of Liberation in 1971.
The Day was also observed in Islamabad, Pakistan with festivity and due solemnity.On November in 1971, the Army, Navy and Air Forces of Bangladesh became fully operational and launched a coordinated offensive against the Pakistani occupation forces.The mission’s defence wing hosted a largely attended reception. Lt Gen Amarjeet Singh Bedi, Director General Defence Intelligence Agency and Deputy Chief of Integrated Defence Staff of India, was present as the chief guest.
It was attended by 1971 war veterans, foreign diplomats, military attaches, journalists, academics and city elite, said the High Commission on Thursday. Defence Adviser of Bangladesh High Commission Brig Gen AKM Ziaur Rahman welcomed the guests.
Gen Bedi spoke highly of the excellent relations existing between Bangladesh and India, the foundation of which was laid during Bangladesh Liberation War fully supported by India.He also highlighted the growing defence cooperation between the two friendly neighbours.
Bangladesh High Commissioner Syed Muazzem Ali paid homage to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman who had led and inspired the Bangalees to fight for freedom and independence in 1971.He also paid tributes to the valiant war veterans of India who had fought side by side with the freedom fighters of Bangladesh.
The mission also brought out a special supplement to mark the Armed Forces Day in cooperation with New Delhi’s prestigious magazine, India Empire.In Pakistan, the Defence Wing of the Bangladesh High Commission organised a reception to mark the day at Hotel Serena in Islamabad on Wednesday evening.
Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development Sayed Zulfiqar Abbas Bukhari attended the reception as the chief guest. Defence Adviser to Bangladesh High Commission Brigadier General Khondaker Shafiur Rahman apprised the guests of the significance of the Day.
Bangladesh High Commissioner Tarik Ahsan offered profound homage to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman who led the Bengali nation on its path to independence and took important steps to develop the Armed Forces of the newly-independent Bangladesh.
