Bd opposition BNP wants polls deferred sends letter to EC

BNP has formally sent a letter to the Election Commission seeking deferment of the 11th parliamentary elections by one month.

BNP, on behalf of 20-party alliance and Jatiya Okiyafront, submitted the letter, signed by BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, to the Election Commission on Sunday. Bijon Kanti Sarkar, member of BNP’s advisory council, handed over the letter. Earlier in the day, Jatiya Oikyofront announced to participate in the upcoming 11th parliamentary elections as part of its movement to restore democracy.

“We, however, demand deferment of the current election schedule by one month and announcement of a new schedule,” said Dr Kamal Hossain while briefing journalists at the Jatiya Press Club. BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, on behalf of Dr Kamal, read out a written statement of the Oikyafront.
