Bangladeshi scientist Dr Belal Hossain’s discovery of a new amphipod species, named Victoriopisa bruneiensis, has earned the recognition of science journal ‘Zootaxa’. Dr Belal Hossain, an associate professor of Fisheries and Marine Science Department at Noakhali Science and Technology University (NSTU), said he along with amphipod taxonomist Dr LE Hughes identified the new species during his post-doctoral research at Australian Museum Research Institute in 2015. The new species – Victoriopisa bruneiensis — was collected from the Sungai Brunei Estuary.Later, their findings were sent to ‘Zootaxa’, a New Zealand-based science journal, for international recognition. ‘Zootaxa’ acknowledged the discovery of Belal and Hughes in its issue in June this year, according to a press release from NSTU.
