BD takes up $7b plan to combat climate for 5 years

Dhaka – The government has prepared a 5-year country investment plan (CIP) to combat climate change impact and would invest US$ seven billion (Tk 56,000 crore) in this sector.The main objectives of the CIP are to manage natural resources, control environmental pollution, combat impacts due to climate change and ensure ecological good governance.
Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal unveiled the CIP, which has been prepared by the environment and forest ministry, at a city hotel yesterday.
Among others, environment and forest minister Anwar Hossain Manju, USAID mission director Janina Jaruzelski and FAO representative in Bangladesh David Doolan also spoke on the occasion.
Environment and forest ministry additional secretary Mohammad Ziaur Rahman chaired the function.
Describing various aspects of the CIP, Anwar Hossain Manju said, “the CIP has prepared by the ministry taking two years considering the on going challenges in environment sector. It would be needed Tk 56,000 crore (US$ 7 billion) to implement the 5-year plan.”
He also said that the strategic investment plan like CIP would help to select priority projects in the environment, forests and climate change sector to face the challenges.
“It is important to take part all the concerned departments and ministries in coordinated ways to implement the plan to achieve the country’s development,” the environment and forest minister said.
He further said that the main objective of the CIP is to ensure healthy environment in the country.
AHM Mustafa Kamal said Bangladesh is appreciated globally due to its economical advancement and environmental management.
“The government has given importance on environment and climate change sector in its seventh five year plan. The over all objectives and target have described in the plan. So, CIP would help to ensure a developed and healthy environment in the country,” the planning minister said.
Additional secretary, who is also the project director of the environment and forest ministry support project Abdullah Al Mohsin briefed about the objectives of the CIP.
“The CIP would help to implement concerned departments and ministry’s annual development projects to achieve the national targeted goals,” he said during presentation of the CIP.
