‘BD textiles hindered by inadequate gas, electricity, land’

Dhaka – Bangladesh Textile Mills Association (BTMA) President Tapan Chowdhury has indicated three things as a hindrance of textile sector investment, these are, inadequate gas, scarcity of electricity and land deficiency.The BTMA president said this during the press meet of the ‘14th Dhaka International Textile and Garment Machinery Exhibition (DTG)’ which was held at the BTMA conference room in the capital yesterday.
Yorkers Trade and Marketing Services Company, Hongkong and Chan Chao International Co Ltd are jointly organizing the four-day Dhaka International Textile and Garment Machinery Exhibition.
Talking about producing the high-end product in Ready Made Garments (RMG) sector, Tapan Chowdhury explained every other country is producing and going after for a value-added product, so gas and electricity has been an intensive problem for producing value-added products.
“We are hopeful that more planned and compliant factories are coming in with planned and eco-friendly manner because previously we used to import fabrics from abroad, now our primary textile industries are robust enough to produce high-end product fabrics in Bangladesh, Tapan Chowdhury added.
DTG received USD$250 million dollar of spot orders from this exhibition last year, BTMA president informed.
According to the BTMA officials, the investment of textile sector is more than USD$ 6 billion in Bangladesh.
Textile industry has been playing a significance role to build a robust and sustainable backward-linkage industry and it is supporting, BTMA officials added.
This year, the contribution of RMG sector is 86 per cent from the entire export income. Hence, the contribution of textile in GDP is approximately 13 per cent, informed BTMA officials.
The employment opportunity and contribution in textile sector is enormous because textile industry is known to be a capital intensive industry.
In this exhibition, 1000 textile machinery manufacturers from 33 countries will participate and 18 halls are to be occupied including 1,200 booths, organisers informed. – Staff Reporter
