BGB deployed in Ashulia amid labour unrest

Dhaka  – Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) were deployed in Ashulia here in savar on Wednesday amid growing tension following the dismissal of some 121 RMG workers and closure of over 100 factories.Fifteen platoons of BGB were deployed in Ashulia to help the law enforcers maintain the law and order following demonstrations by garment workers, public relations officer of BGB headquarters Mohsin Reza told UNB.The BGB members will patrol the RMG hub until further notice, he said,UNB news agency reported.Police and witnesses said the workers of some 55 garment factories, including ‘Envoy’, the Rose, Green Life and Prime, came to their respective factories in the morning.However, they found notices hanging at the entrances which read: ‘Factories were shut down for an indefinite period’.Besides, over 50 more factories remained closed from Tuesday after their workers went on a work abstention to press for their demand for raising the minimum wage to Tk 15,000.Meanwhile, garment factory ‘Windy Apparels Limited’ terminated some 121 of its workers for vandalising the factory and breaching the discipline.Besides, two cases were filed over 200 workers of ‘Windy Apparels Limited’ and ‘Fountain Garments’ over the vandalism.On the other hand, a group of garment workers blocked the Abdullahpur-Bypile road in the morning.Later, police fired teargas shells to disperse them, said officer-in-charge of Ashulia Police Station Mohsinul Kadir.
