BNP-backed panel wins SC Bar Asociation polls

The BNP-backed Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Oikya Parishad (JAOP) swept the Supreme Court Bar Association elections against the ruling Awami League-supported Sammilita Ainjibi Samannay Parishad (SASP).
JAOP bagged 13 posts, out of 14, including the posts of the president and the general secretary.
Vice-chairman of Bangladesh Bar Council Khandakar Mahbub Hossain and Barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokon were elected president and general secretary of the association respectively.Some 3,143 lawyers, out of total 4,055, of the country’s apex court exercised their franchise in the polls conducted by a seven-member panel, headed by senior lawyer M Nur Hossain Chowdhury.
A total of 35 candidates, including 14 each from Awami League-backed and BNP-blessed panels, contested the election for 14 posts of the association.
Former Law Minister Abdul Matin Khasru and Advocate Rabiul Islam Budu from the Awami League panel vied for the posts of president and general secretary respectively against Bangladesh Bar Council vice-chairman Khandker Mahbub Hossain and current SCBA general secretary Barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokon from the BNP-backed panel. – UNB
