BNP balmes Govt-Justice Khairul for air of ‘volatility’

Dhaka, Aug 18– BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Friday alleged that the government is deliberately trying to create a volatile situation in the country to ‘perpetuate’ its power.“Khairul Haque has destroyed the country’s democratic and constitutional system during his tenure as the Chief Justice. He gave the 13th amendment verdict before the passage of the 15th amendment pushing the country towards instability, anarchy and uncertainty,” he said.
Speaking at a discussion, the BNP leader further said, ‘Now, I think the government is intentionally trying to create a volatile situation in the country to cling onto power.”
National Democratic Party (NDP), one of the components of the BNP-led 20-party alliance, organised the programme at Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU), marking the 9th death anniversary of former Information Minister Anwar Zahid.
Fakhrul came down hard on ex-Chief Justice and Law Commission Chairman Justice ABM Khairul Haque saying he took a stance against people opposing the Supreme Court verdict that annulled the 16th constitutional amendment.
He demanded the resignation of Khairul Haque from the Law Commission for taking a stance against ‘democracy, judiciary and people’. “We strongly condemn his activities.”
The BNP leader also criticised him for holding a press conference as the Chairman of the Law Commission against the 16th amendment verdict.
Fakhrul alleged that Awami League has destroyed country’s all democratic institutions after illegally returning to power. “Now, they’re trying to destroy the judiciary, one of the three basic pillars of the state. The party is openly conspiring to ruin the country by demolishing its foundation.” – UNB
