BNP blames govt for ‘terrible’ coronavirus situation

BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Wednesday said the government must shoulder the responsibility for the ‘terrible’ coronavirus situation in the country.

“There’s no value of people to those who have taken the charge of running the country by force as business and so-called GDP growth are much important to them. Nothing will improve, and everything will collapse as the country is going to face dire consequences,” he said.

Speaking at a discussion, the BNP leader further said, “As the government has created such a situation (by lifting shutdown), they’ll have to take its responsibility. The technical advisory committee formed by the government warned of a terrible situation if the public holidays are not extended. Even, the Prime Minister’s personal physician Dr Abdullah said it’s wrong and suicidal decision.”

Nagorik Oikya arranged the programme at Dhaka Reporters’ Unity (DRU) marking its 8th founding anniversary. Fakhrul joined the programme using internet.

He alleged that people are seriously worried about the consequences of withdrawing the shutdown and general holidays amid the surge in corona cases and fatalities.

The BNP leader said it will be very difficult to get rid of the coronavirus as there is no vaccine and medicine to contain the transmission of the deadly virus.

He said Bangladesh could have avoided the deadly corona situation had the government sincerely taken well-thought-out plans and strategies in consultation with all stakeholders.

Stating that the country’s economy is on the brink of collapse, Fakhrul said the government must take effective steps to overcome it.

He said strong unity of people and political and democratic forces is now imperative to protect the country and its people from the coronavirus and its fallouts.

Fakhrul said people are now not getting treatment at the hospitals across the country due to sordid condition of the health sector.

Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD-Rab) President ASM Abdur Rab the whole world and human civilization are now under threat due to the coronavirus. “No individual or group or government alone can control the corona pandemic. Everybody’s involvement is necessary to tackle the situation.”

Nagorik Oikya convener Mahmudur Rahman Manna said the government is working for businessmen not for people since it is not elected by them. “We’re not safe in the hands of those who are now in power.”
