BNP candidate, his wife arrested for ‘subversive activities’

Dhaka, Dec 26 – A BNP candidate and his wife were on Wednesday on the charge of carrying out subversive activities as violence continued unabated in the run-up to the general election, scheduled to be held on December 30. Meanwhile, BNP candidates were hurt and others were assaulted during clashes and attacks allegedly by Awami League men in different districts.
In Jhenidah Motiur Rahman candidate for Jhenidah-3 and his wife were arrested in Rayerbazar area of Dhaka early yesterday.
Milu Mia Biswas, assistant superintendent of Jhenidah police said that Motiur, also Nayeb-e-Ameer of Jhenidah district unit of Jamaat-e-Islami stands accused in 27 cases.
He was arrested along with his wife Nazma Rahman from their daughter’s residence in Rayerbazar area of Dhaka around 2:00 am, the police official said.
Two laptops and seven mobile phones used for carrying out the subversive activities were recovered from Motiur’s possession.
In Pabna, BNP Candidate for Pabna-4 constituency Habibur Rahman Habib stabbed allegedly by Awami League men just before attending an election rally in Ishawardi Upazila of Pabna yesterday.
Habib was stabbed when he reached Ishwardi Alhaz School field for the election rally and campaigning.
Locals said some 12-15 men wearing Awami League badges attacked Habib with knives and machetes.
Police detained eight people on the spot. Bahauddin Faruki,officer-in-charge (OC) of Ishwardi Police Station confirmed about the matter and said eight people were detained from the spot in this connection.
Habibur Rahman Habib has been sent to Iswardi General Hospital, the OC said.
In Thakurgaon, Rahat Ara Begum, wife of BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, was stopped from electioneering for her husband allegedly by ruling Awami League activists.
At a press briefing at her residence, she came up with this allegation yesterday.
She said that she and her daughter also with supporters went for election campaigning but a gang of eight to ten people with sharp weapons, intercepted them. They threatened them to attack if they do
not leave the place immediately.
Rahat Ara Begum was campaigning for his husband Fakhrul who is contesting the upcoming 11th parliamentary election from Thakurgaon-1 constituency.
In Bagerhat, the police detained 99 Jamaat-e-Islam activists from the residence of Jamaat leader Md Abdul Alim, the ‘paddy sheaf’ candidate for the Bagerhat-4 seat.
They were planning to cause unrest ahead of the Dec 30 parliamentary election, police claimed.
In a media briefing on Tuesday evening, Bagerhat Police Superintendent Pankaj Chandra Rai said the suspects were detained near the Asilaha Pilot High School in Morrelganj.
“The detainees have been sent to jail through the court,” he said.
The police recovered grenades, petrol bombs along with numerous makeshift arms. However, Abdul Alim couldn’t be detained, said the police superintendent.
The police acted on intelligence that a meeting was being held at the residence of Abdul Alim to discuss plans to cause chaos and unrest in Morelganj and Sharankhola during the election, he said.
We detained 99 Jamaat activists of various positions in the party during the raid he said.
Following a search of the premises, the police recovered one unlicensed firearm, three bullets, nine hand grenades, six petrol bombs and numerous other domestic arms.
In Satkhira, police detained a relative of Jamaat candidate for Satkhira-2 constituency.
Miaraj Hossein, an assistant professor of Satkhira Govt. college was detained with 85 thousand fake note. He is son in low of Abdul Khalek a candidate for BNP Satkhira-2 constituency.
