Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Saturday demanded formation of supreme judicial council to impeach Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmed and acting CEC Abdul Mobarak.
“The CEC and acting CEC should be impeached for violation of the constitution through the supreme judicial council,” said BNP standing committee member Barrister Rafiqul Islam Miah while addressing a roundtable meeting on democracy, election and roles of election commission at the National Press Club.He said CEC is a constitutional post and there is no mention in the constitution about the acting CEC. So, constitutionally acting CEC is illegal, he added.
Hence, the BNP leader claimed that both the CEC and acting CEC should be brought under legal action as they one had taken leave to go abroad and another took charge as acting CEC.
He criticized the government to allow India to use Bangladesh’s corridor facilities for supplying power and said the facilities are being given without taking into the account the losses and profits of the country.
“They (ruling party people) are interested to have their commission but not the interest of the country,” he added.
He called upon the people to get united to stop plundering of public wealth and corruption.
Sammilito Peshajibi Parishad organised the roundtable with its president Ruhul Amin Gazi in the chair.
Former vice chancellor of Dhaka University Prof Emajuddin Ahmed, journalist Mahbubullah, trustee of Ganosastha Dr Jafrullah Chowdhury, Prof AFM Yusuf Haider, former cabinet secretary Abdul Halim and Juba Dal leader Moazzem Hossian Alal, among others, also spoke on the occasion. BNP chairperson’s adviser Dr AZM Zahid Hossain conducted the function.
Emajuddin Ahmedsaid the upazila parishad elections proved that the government is weak. “It the government was strong it would not have resorted to manipulate the upazila polls,” he added.
Meanwhile, addressing a human chain programme in front of the National Press Club, BNP standing committee member Goyeshwar Chandra Roy said the government has turned the country into a greater prison.
He said those do not acknowledge Ziaur Rahman as the proclaimer of the independence are the real war criminals.
Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Karmajibi Dal organized the programme protesting carrying out propaganda against Ziaur Rahman and his family members and demanding the release of national leaders.
Presided over by Bakul Bhuiyan, president of Dhaka (north) unit of the organization, the function was also addressed, among others, by Jagpa president Shafiul Alam Prodhan, Ismail Hossain Bengal, Istiaque Aziz Ulfat, Shirin Sultana and Shama Obaid. – Staff Reporter
