Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) will stage demonstration across the country today protesting sending of its three senior leaders including acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir to jail by rejection their bails.
BNP joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi announced the programme from an emergency press conference at party headquarters at Naya Paltan in the city on Sunday.
The announcement came hours after a metropolitan magistrate court sent the BNP leaders to jail by rejecting their bails.The BNP said the demonstration would be staged at major cities and district and upazila levels.
He alleged that the government sent the leaders to the prison to meet its political gains.
Rizvi termed the incident as the outburst of vengeance and repressive attitude of the government saying that they were sent to jail since they were vocal for party, country, democracy and independence.
He said the “isolated” government wants to divert the attention of people from its misdeeds.
The BNP leader demanded immediate release of the party leaders.
BNP leaders—Kazi Asaduzzaman, Dr Asaduzzman Ripon, Khairul Kabir Khokan and Abdul Latif Jony, among others, were present on the occasion.
Meanwhile, a BNP delegation led by its standing committee member Nazrul Islam Khan and Abdullah Al Noman on Sunday paid respect to the memory of late party secretary general Khandaker Delwar Hossain by placing wreath at his graveyard at Ghior in Manikganj.
Later, they also took part in a milad and doa mahfil. Akbar Hossain Bablu, son of Khadker Delwar Hossain and Khandker Akhter Hamid Pabon and Delwara Begum Panna, among others, were present on the occasion.
Khandker Delwar Hossain died on March 15 in 2011 at a hospital in Singapore. – Staff Reporter
