BNP extends support to hartal

The main opposition BNP on Saturday extended its support to Sunday’s countrywide dawn-to-dusk shutdown (hartal)  being enforced by 12 Islamist and like-minded parties.BNP Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi told a press conference at the party’s Naya Paltan headquarters that the support was unconditional.

“We’ve decided to give our full supports to the shutdown programme called by the Islamist parties in protest against the Friday’s police attacks across the country on the faithful,” he said.

Twelve like-minded Islamist parties called for a nationwide dawn-to-dusk shutdown for Sunday protesting what they termed attacks on demonstrators who were demanding punishment against the ‘atheist’ bloggers of Shahbagh.

On hartal eve plainclothes police raided officers of Islamist parties and reportedly ransacked some of those.

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel was deployed in the city on Saturday evening to maintain law-and-order ahead of Sunday’s hartal called by Islamist 12-party alliance.
Confirming the matter to banglanews, BGB information office Mohsin Reza said, “Some ten platoons of BGB personnel will take position in different points of the city from 6:00pm.”
On Friday, the alliance called nationwide dawn-to-dusk hartal for Sunday immediately after countrywide violence.
At least four people people were killed and 281 others, including police personnel and journalists Islamic and like minded parties’ along with Jamaat-Shibir went into berserk in the name staging countrywide protest after Jumma prayer. (Source: banglanews24.com)
