Dhaka – Terming dialogue the language of democracy, BNP standing committee member Lt Gen Mahbubur Rahman on Sunday urged the government
to sit for talks with the opposition to find out a reasonable solution to the ongoing political crisis over the polls-time government.
“You can’t gag the voice of people by talking about constitution. The charter has been formulated for people. Dialogue is a must to resolve the ongoing political crisis as it’s the language of democracy,” he said.
Mahbub came up with the call at a discussion arranged by All Community Forum at the Jatiya Press Club.
Justifying the opposition’s demand for arranging the next polls under a non-party caretaker government, the BNP leader said no major party has trust in each other and even they cannot tolerate each other.
He urged the government to shun its stubbornness to hold a one-sided election under a partisan administration showing respect to public opinion.
“Try to read the minds of 16 crore people. Don’t want to impose lopsided polls on people against their will,” Mahbub added.
The army-officer-turned politician said there is no country in the world where national election is held keeping the cabinet and parliament in place. “It’s unimaginable…but the government in Bangladesh is thinking to hold elections without dissolving Parliament.”
Mentioning October a month of movement, Mahbub warned that they will wage a strong movement if the government does not take steps to hold
the polls under a non-party government.
Chaired by All Community Forum president Asharfuddin Bakul, the programme was addressed by, among others, BNP chairperson’s adviser Ahmed Azam Khan and Dhaka city unit BNP members secretary Abdus Salam.
