BNP, if in power, will publish Liberation War martyrs list

Dhaka, Dec 20 – BNP standing committee member Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury yesterday said that if voted to power the party in future would prepare and publish the list of martyrs of the War of Liberation of the country in 1971. “If the present government does not prepare the list of martyrs, the BNP will do it. When the BNP will be voted to power it will prepare it. Not only this, the BNP will publish it through erecting memorial plaques in each area,” he said while speaking at a discussion meeting at Bangladesh Photojournalists Association auditorium.
Accusing the ruling Awami League of doing politics of publishing different lists, he said there are not giving importance to publish the most important list.
“Where is the list of those who sacrificed their lives for Bangladesh and its independence. What’s the reason behind indecision of the government in preparing this list,” he asked.
Referring to the statement of the international human rights organization Amnesty International that asked the government to follow Mandela rules in providing treatment to party chairperson Khaleda Zia, he said the AI expressed its concern saying that Bangladesh’s people are in doubt whether the former premier would get justice.
He said such statement from an international institution seriously questioned that Bangladesh’s politics, democracy, human rights and rule of law.
Welcoming the ruling party council, the former minister said that they expect that their council would give announcement as to how they restore the democracy and voting rights and fundamental rights of the people.
Kazi Moniruzzaman Monir, an adviser of Nagorik Adhikar Andolon Forum, presided over the meeting while BNP leader Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal, Abu Naser Mohammed Rahmatullah and Bilkis Islam, among others, addressed the meeting.
Meanwhile, the BNP has deferred its yesterday’s scheduled press conference for today.
Party sources, said the press conference would be followed by party standing committee meeting at chairperson’s political office in Gulshan this afternoon. – Staff Reporter
