EC may schedule Dhaka City Corporations polls on Sunday

Dhaka, Dec 20 – Election Commission (EC) is going to sit on Sunday with a number of agenda including DNCC and DSCC polls schedule and delimitation of parliamentary seats.EC sources said the Commission will discuss an array of items at its 57th meeting on Sunday for the next course of action.
On EC agenda, there are a number of important items to be discussed which include fixing the schedule of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) elections.
Besides, the polls schedule, EC will talk on the programme for updating the electoral roll, approval of Election Medal policy, observance of National Voters Day 2020, standardization of the election training budget, finalisation of the draft Representation of Peoples Order, 2019 and draft finalisation of delimitation of the parliamentary seats.
EC sources said the elections to DNCC, DSCC and Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) were held in 28 April 2015.
As per the local government (city corporation) law, the elections are held 180 days prior to the end of the tenure of the completion of five years.
The first meeting of DNCC was held on 14 May and DSCC on 17 May. On the other hand, the first meeting CCC was held on 6 August 2015.
The tenure of DNCC will end on 13 May 2020 and DSCC on 16 May 2020 while the tenure of CCC will end on July 2020.
The elections of CCC will be eligible in February so the elections would be held in March or later. The terms of office of the CCC will end in July 2020.
However, EC does not have the CCC polls in the agenda on Sunday’s full commission meeting.
Sources said EC would hold all the city corporation polls with the Electronic voting machines. – Staff Reporter
