At least 15 people were injured as some miscreants attacked the house of a BNP-backed mayoral candidate at Bank Colony area here on Monday.Witnesses said 20/25 miscreants, riding motorbikes, swooped on the residence of BNP-backed mayoral candidate Badiuzzaman Bodi and fired blank shots when he was in a meeting with his party men in the afternoon. He returned to his house today after securing bail in a violence case.
At one stage, the supporters of Bodi hurled brickbats towards the miscreants, triggering a clash that left 15 people injured.
The miscreants also vandalised some furniture of the house and motorcycles during the incident. However, Badiuzzaman Bodi escaped unhurt.
On information, police rushed in and brought the situation under control.
A tense situation was prevailing in the area following the incident. Additional police have been deployed to avert further trouble.
None was arrested in this connection, said Kamruzzaman, officer-in-charge of Savar Police Station.
Contacted, Badiuzzaman blamed the ruling party men for the attack.
At least 25 people, including a policeman, were injured in a clash between the supporters of two mayoral candidates in Chauddagram upazila on Monday.
Police and witnesses said the supporters of Awami League-backed mayoral candidate Mizanur Rahman and the party’s rebel contender Imam Hossain Patwari were campaigning for their candidates in Chauddagram Bazar in the evening.
The clash erupted when Patwari’s followers brought out a procession in the town and chanted slogans against Mizan.
At one stage, a chase and counter-chase took place between them when they threw brick chips at each other, leaving the 25 people injured from both sides.
The injured were taken to Chauddagram Upazila Health Complex and different hospitals of Comilla.
Twelve motorbikes and three microbuses were torched and several shops, including the shop of upazila AL joint convener Akhter Hossain Patwari, were also vandalized during the incident.
Both the groups exploded over 50 crude bombs and fired an unspecified number of blank shots during the fight.
