Accusing BNP leaders of violating the election code of conduct through their various vicious remark, Awami League joint general secretary Mabub-ul-Alam Hanif on Monday demanded the Election Commission create a level-playing field ahead of the December 30 municipal polls so that the election atmosphere is not affected in any way.“BNP leaders are making false remarks about the government as well as Awami League to misguide people which are tantamount to violation of the election code of conduct in some cases. We request the Election Commission to take stern action to ensure a level-playing field,” he said.
The Awami League leader said this while addressing a press conference held at Awami League president’s Dhanmondi political office in the city.
The ruling party leader said, “I think there’s no reason for the Election Commission to be tough against Awami League as the party in power and show sympathy to BNP as an out-of-power party.”
He went on saying, “During the past few days, the Election Commission has taken actions against some Awami League candidates over allegations of breaching the election code of conduct which is unfair. But, the Commission didn’t take any action when BNP leaders and activists resorted to such violations. We request the EC to behave equally with all.”
About the comment of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia that her party will now defeat the government through elections, not by any movement, Hanif said “The people of the country think there’s no reason to cast votes for BNP in the municipal polls.”
“Why will people cast votes for BNP? People can cast votes for BNP candidates if they want to see killing through petrol bombs. Is BNP thinking that people will vote BNP to get killed in petrol bomb attacks?”
He went on saying, “I believe people don’t want to lose their lives in petrol bomb attacks. So, there’s no scope to vote BNP candidates.”
While exchanging greetings with members of the Christian community, marking the Christmas, Khaleda Zia on Sunday said “The country is now in a deep crisis and conspiracy. To save the country, now we’ll have to defeat this regime through polls, not by any movement.”
