Dhaka – Though the party is yet to get permission from the police to hold its sixth national council on March 19, BNP on Friday formally announced to arrange it at any venue in the city.
BNP joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi came up with the announcement at a press briefing at the party’s Nayapaltan central office.Earlier on January 23, BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said their party standing committee decided to hold the council in March. But, he did not announce any particular date.
“We’ve applied to the authorities concerned seeking permission to arrange our council on March 19 at any one of three city venues. We only got response from Public Works Department for using Suhrawardy Udyan. They’ve said they have no objection, depending police permission,” Rizvi said.
He further said, “We’ve also sought permission from police authorities, but they’re yet to respond to it.”
BNP’s last and fifth national council was held on December 8, 2009.
Though BNP had planned thrice to hold the national council in March 2013 and in September 2014, and in October 2015, the party finally failed to do that.
According to the RPO and the rules of party registration, political parties must hold their councils in time after every three years.
Rizvi said they have started taking all-out preparations for successfully hold their sixth national council.
He said they are listing the names of councillors of different categories, including presidents and general secretaries of all city, district, upazila, thana and municipality units.
Besides, the BNP leader said, they have sent letters to district committees to send the names of two women councillors from each district.
He said they have also taken steps to reorganise the committees of city and district units.
Rizvi said they have also directed their all units to send to the centre by February 25 the names of those party leaders and activists who were killed and ‘made disappeared’ during movements or naturally died since their fifth council as a condolence motion will be placed at the council expressing shock at their demise. – UNB
