BNP national council meet likely ‘after UZ polls’

As part of its move to revitalise the party for waging a strong movement to push the government for a fresh national election, BNP will hold its national council after the upazila polls.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the party standing committee, the highest policymaking body of BNP, held on Sunday night.
“We’ve taken three important decisions — holding the staggered party councils, forming new 21-member convening committee of BNP Dhaka City unit, and forming new committees of the all district and upazila units of the party before the council– at the meeting,” a party standing committee member told UNB after the meeting, preferring not to be named. The nearly two-hour meeting began around 8:45pm with Khaleda Zia in the chair at her Gulshan office.
Another BNP policymaker who attended the meeting said the formation of the Dhaka city unit BNP was elaborately discussed with a great importance at the meeting.
Most of the standing committee members suggested dissolving the current convening committee headed by Sadeque Hossain Khoka, he said.
The party policymakers also opined to form a 21-member new convening committee of the unit within a very short time to streamline the party’s most important unit.
According to the two BNP leaders, the party policymakers unanimously agreed to hold the party’s council after the upazila polls.
They said dedicated party leaders who were active during the party’s movement before the January 5 will be evaluated in the national council.
Those opportunists who were inactive and went into hiding during the previous movement will have no place in the new BNP committee to be formed through its sixth council, they added.
The BNP chief asked the policymakers to work sincerely for ensuring good results in the remaining phases of the upazila polls. She also asked them to try their best for ensuring single party or its alliance candidate against each post in every upazila.
BNP standing committee members RA Gani, Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Moudud Ahmed, Lt Gen (retd) Mahbubur Rahman, Begum Sarwari Rahman, Rafiqul Islam Miah, Jamiruddin Sircar, Mirza Abbas, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Abdul Moyeen Khan and Nazrul Islam attended the meeting.
