BNP protests renaming of ‘Joypurhat Shaheed Zia College’

Dhaka, Oct 04 – BNP on Sunday strongly condemned and protested the renaming of ‘Joypurhat Shaheed Zia College’, saying it has exhibited the government’s ‘nasty political vengeance and jealousy’.

In a statement, party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir alleged that the government has unilaterally changed the name of the college ‘ignoring’ rules and regulations and public sentiment.
“We strongly condemn and protest this incident. It’s easy to change the name of the college, but it’s impossible to erase the unforgettable name of Ziaur Rahman, Bir Uttam from the hearts of people and history,” he said.
Fakhrul said Awami League has ‘insulted’ the great Liberation War by changing the name of the college as Zia was a freedom fighter and the commander of the Z Force.
“This incident has turned out to be a nasty and bad example. The people of the country will remember all the incidents of Awami misdeeds. People are the main force to end the Awami misrule,” he observed.
The BNP leader said Awami did nothing for the welfare of the country. “Rather, the ruling party leaders and activists are getting involved in crimes against humanity and various misdeeds every day. “The repression on women and children across the country has taken a dangerous turn only because of them. No one has any security now in the country.”
He alleged that the government wants to erase Zia’s name from everything, getting scared of his immense popularity. “But people will keep his name immortal by holding his ideology in their hearts for ages.” – UNB
