Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) will stage mass hunger strike across the country on May 4 protesting extra judicial killing and repressive acts of the government on its leaders and activists. The hunger strike will begin at 9:00am and continue till 6:00pm.
The BNP will also stage demonstrations at upazila, district and city levels on April 28 over the issue.BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir announced the new programme at a press conference following a joint meeting of the party at its headquarters at Naya Paltan in the city on Saturday.
This is the second issue based programme of the BNP following the January 5 parliamentary polls boycotted by the party. Earlier, the BNP staged a two-day long march towards Teesta Barrage on April 22-23 demanding fair share of water of the river.
Fakhrul told reporters that the demonstration and mass hunger strike programmes would be observed protesting the growing repressive acts of the government including killing of opposition leaders and activists, their forced disappearances, filing of false cases against them and indictment of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia and her son Tarique Rahman.
He accused the government of implementing a blueprint to keep BNP leaders and activists away from politics and the party out of future elections by filing false cases against them.
The BNP spokesman alleged that the ruling party cadres and members of the law enforcing agencies have been carrying out severe oppression and repression on BNP leaders and activists at different places in the country.
The BNP leader expressed his concern over inducting senior leaders of the largest party were implicated in false cases and questioned as to how democracy would sustain and democratic practice would be possible in the country if the government continues the repressive acts.
BNP chairperson’s adviser Shamsuzzaman Dudu, joint secretaries general—Salahuddin Ahmed and Mizanur Rahman Minu were present on the occasion. – Stff Reporter
