Pro-blockade activists hurled bombs on a police vehicle in the city on the third day of 18-party alliance’s 71-hour blockade Thursday.
Police sources said at least 10 people, including two policemen, were injured during the clash around 7.30 am in the city’s Shalbagaan area.
Ziaur Rahman Zia, Officer-in-Charge of Boalia Model Police Station, said that blockade supporters took out a procession in the area and uprooted electric poles before setting them on fire to block the road.
They lobbed handmade and petrol bombs as well as brickbats towards the police when they arrived in Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC). Subsequently, the APC caught fire after a petrol-bomb exploded.
OC Rahman said police dispersed the Opposition supporters by firing rubber bullets.
Two policemen, injured during the clash, were being treated at the Police Lines Hospital, he said.
Barrister Mahbubur Rahman, Commissioner of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police, said additional police were deployed in all sensitive points to avert any destructive and sabotage incidents at any cost. -BSS, Rajshahi
