Boro paddy harvest on in Khulna Division

Harvest of Irri-Boro paddy is progressing fast in ten districts of Khulna division during the current season with much enthusiasm to the farmers.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources said, farmers of the 10 south-western districts cultivated Irri-Boro paddy on a total of 5,88,555 hectares of land this year with the production target of 23.39 lakh tonnes of rice.
The ten districts are Jessore, Narail, Jhenidah, Magura, Kushtia, Chuadanga, Meherpur, Satkhira, Khulna and Bagerhat.
Sources said district wise break up of land is as follows: 1,40,585 hectares of land were brought in Jessore district, 43,471 hectares of land in Narail, 83,636 hectares of land in
Jhenidah, 43,145 hectares of land in Magura, 36,289 hectares of land in Kushtia, 39,306 hectares of land in Chuadanga, 25,157 hectares of land in Meherpur, 71,729 hectares of land in Satkhira, 48,482 hectares of land in Khulna and 45,208 hectares of land in Bagerhat district.
Farmers are expecting a bumper production of Irri-Boro paddy his fiscal year as they are getting at least 45-48 maunds of paddy from a acre of land thanks to proper monitoring by the authorities, DAE official sources said.While visiting some areas of Jessore, Khulna and Narail districts BSS correspondent found that cutting of early varieties of Boro paddy particularly BRRI-28, BRRI-29, has been completed and the harvest of other varieties was going on in full swing.
DAE officials, growers and local farmers of the region expressed their similar hopes to get a bumper Irri-Boro production as climatic conditions are so far favourable for the purposes.
The officials of Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) particularly sub-assistant agriculture officers in field level was motivated the farmers to cultivate Irri-Boro on their land is large scale to meet its demand for ensuring food security and to make the growers economically benefit as well.
Additional Director (AD) of Jessore regional DAE, Abdul Mannan told BSS that necessary steps have been taken to ensure supply of adequate quantity of improved quality seeds, fertilisers, insecticides and other agricultural inputs among the growers in fair prices to boost Irri-boro production.
Field workers and crop specialists of the DAE helped the farmers make the Irri-Boro cultivation programme a success in the current season, he (AD) added.
