Dhaka – Boro-paddy on About 43 thousands hectares of land was damaged by flash flood due to incessant rain in Habiganj District. According to the District Agriculture Extension (DAE) total land of 1 lakh 16 thousand and 510 hectares were brought under the Boro cultivation this year.The incessant rain and the water-rush came from the hilly area of Indian estate Tripura for last fortnight submerged the low-laying land of Haor areas of the district. About 43 thousands hector land of Boro-paddy of 7 upazilas out of 8 in the district was damaged while about 50 thousand farmers have become victim.
The affected upazilas are Ajmiriganj, Baniachong, Lakhai, Nabiganj, Bahubal, Habiganj Sadar and Madhabpur. Of them Baniachong and Ajmiriganj upazila were mostly affected. The farmers of these areas are living with much distress and agony as they lost their crops.
Some farmers were trying to save their crops from a small part of Boro paddy in relatively higher lands. After harvesting, the crops are going to be rotten due to lack of sufficient sunlight.
Mafiz Mia, of Umednager village told this correspondent that `my entire ripe paddy has gone under water. If the government will not provide compensation then we will be face a deadly hardship’.
Ajmiriganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer Titan Khesha said that the higher authorities had been informed about the situation. Already 16 metric tones of rice were allocated from the government which will be distributed among the affected farmers.
Meanwhile the water of all rivers of the district are flowing nearly danger level which creating anxious for the farmers as they suspect more damage of crops next. The rivers flowing nearly danger-level were Khowai, Karangi, Shutang, Kushiara, Barak and others. – Staff Reporter
