Dhaka – BRAC will carry out month-long emergency relief activities to help the people in the haor (low-lying wetland) area hit by flashfloods, resulting from continuous rainfall for about three weeks now. UNB news agency reported
Under the initiative worth Tk 15 crore, BRAC will support 50,000 families to cope with the immediate impact of the calamity.
The non-governmental development organisation, however, began its regular relief effort immediately after the flashflood had hit, said a press release on Thursday.
But with the fast deterioration of the situation and spread of flood affected areas, it is undertaking this added emergency relief activity, it said.
The emergency relief programme will be carried out in four districts, namely Kishoreganj, Sunamganj, Habiganj and Netrokona, in coordination with the local government authorities.
Gawher Nayeem Wahra, director of BRAC’s Disaster Management and Climate Change programme said, “We have taken up this initiative as there was a rapid deterioration in the situation in the last 48 hours.”
“A new crisis has emerged in the haors as fish and duck are also dying due to the incessant rain, besides the flooding of the crop fields. We have undertaken this effort to help the haor inhabitants cope with the immediate crisis.”
