Brahmaputra, Ghagot cross danger level in Gaibandha

Water level of the Brahmaputra and the Ghagot, two major rivers of Gaibandha, crossed
danger mark on Sunday night inundating the river basin and char areas.
According to sources, water level in all the major rivers except the Karotoa flowing
through the district rose sharply in the last 24 hours till Monday 9 am due to the incessant
rain and on rush of hilly water from the upstream.
The officials of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) here said the water level
in the Brahmaputra rose by 52 cm, the Ghagot 78 cm and the Teesta 15 cm while the
Karotoa reducing by 12 cm during the period.
Of them, the Brahmaputra at Fulchhari Ghat point and the Ghagot at New Bridge Road
point of the district town were flowing 3 cm and 18 cm above their respective danger
level.
On the other hand, the Teesta was flowing 89 cm at Sundarganj point and the Karotoa
225 cm at Katakhali Bridge point of Gobindaganj upazila below their respective danger
level.
With the rise of water level in the Brahmaputra River, the river basin and chars of
Sundarganj, Sadar, Fulchhari and Saghata upazilas had been inundated and the standing
crops particularly T-Aman paddy and summer vegetables went under floodwater.
With the rise of water level in the Brahmaputra River, the erosion took serious turns
at many places along the western side of the river including Chandipur, Kapasia,
Kamarjani, Gidari, Urya, Gozaria, Saghata and Haldia unions of the district creating
immense sufferings and much anxiety to the erosion victims.
A culvert of Flood Control Embankment has been collapsed at Goghat area near to
Kamarjani Bondar on Sunday causing the water of Brahmaputra was entering the
crops land of Malibari union of Sadar upazila threatening tension to the T-Aman paddy
cultivators.
Many erosion and flood victims had taken shelter on the nearby flood control
embankment with their belongings including domestic animals and poultry birds and
were passing their days miserably for want of food and drinking water.
Executive engineer of BWDB Rezaul Mostafa Asafuddowla said as the Brahmaputra
was flowing over its danger mark, the officials and the employees had been kept alert to
protect the embankment.
As the Ghagot was also flowing over its danger level, security measures had also been
tightened at the town protection embankment, he also added.
Deputy Commissioner Dr Quazi Anwarul Haque said he had already informed the higher
authorities concerned about the flood situation here and taken necessary measures to
mitigate the sufferings of the flood victims. -BSS, Gaibandha
