Early earthquake preparedness for reducing losses stressed

The extent of losses of human lives during earthquake could be reduced substantially
through creating awareness about the natural calamity among students and adopting early
preparedness, speakers said on Sunday.
They were addressing inaugural ceremony of a two-day ‘Training Course and Simulation
on Earthquake’ organised for the students by non-government organisation ‘Lamb’ under
its Disaster Risk Reduction Project at Aziz Nagar Girls’ High School in the city.
Rangpur Fire Service and Civil Defense Station has been extending cooperation in
arranging the training being participated by 40 female students of the school with its
Headmaster of the School Abdur Rashid in the chair.
Programme Officer of the Disaster Risk Reduction Project of ‘Lamb’ Lincon Sen
narrated importance of awareness on earthquake among students and providing them
training for comprehensive disaster management during and after earthquake.
Deputy Director of Rangpur Fire Service and Civil Defense Station Mozammel Haque
and its Assistant Director Nittya Gopal Das conducted first day sessions disseminating
knowledge on earthquake preparedness among the students as resource persons.
The speakers narrated the long-term comprehensive government programmes to reduce
risks of the natural, environmental and man-made disasters to the minimum, tolerable and
acceptable level ensuring proper preparedness, training and management.
Most of the severest intensity earthquakes occurred at daytimes during the past 100 years
causing maximum casualties in the educational institutions for lack of preparedness and
knowledge among the teachers, students and concerned authorities, they said.
They suggested the teachers for organising and demonstrating artificial earthquake rescue
and relief operations in all educational intuitions to educate the students on their roles for
self-safety during and post earthquake times.
They stressed for incorporating special curriculum on reducing disaster risks and
providing training to the teachers and students to disseminate knowledge on earthquake
preparedness and create mass social awareness on self-saving for all people.
They urged the teachers for disseminating knowledge on natural disasters, including
earthquake preparedness, among the students, teachers, school managing committee
members and guardians for creating mass social awareness.
Loses of human lives could be reduced substantially through providing training on basic
first aids and disaster preparedness among students to enable them assisting the victims
