A group of businessmen have urged the government to make agitating politicians hold talks to end ‘political unrest’.
The newly elected office-bearers of the Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) made the appeal at a meeting with Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith at his office in Dhaka on Thursday.
The BNP and its 19 allies are agitating for snap polls under a non-partisan caretaker government.The Jamaat enforced shutdowns on Wednesday and Thursday against the death penalty for its Assistant Secretary General ATM Azharul Islam by the International Crimes Tribunal.
MCCI President Nasim Manjur led the chamber delegation.
He said at the meeting: “In our country, economic trend depends on the political situation. We, businessmen, want an end to violence, blockades and strikes.”
“We would like to request the political parties that engage in politics while keeping the economy alive. We don’t want anything like 2013.”
The MCCI office-bearers put forward a set of suggestions to the minister.
They said they would support the government to implement any policy and enforce any law if they were taken to maintain peace and stability and in the interest of business.
The finance minister, however, said he did not think there would be any political unrest in ‘future’
“I think there will be no political unrest. Bangladesh economy is very dynamic. I hope the economy will perform well.” – bdnews24.com
