Bumper jute production in Netrokona this year

Dhaka-Farmers in the district are expecting a bumper production of jute this season riding on favourable weather and availability of quality seeds and fertilisers.As the farmers of ten upazilas in the district have got satisfactory profits in jute cultivation over the last couple of years, farming of the cash crop has expanded.
According to the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), jute was cultivated on 5,390 hectares of land this year in the district compared to 4,870 hectares last year.
Of the total, HYV kenaf was cultivated on 3,147 hectares of land, tossa on 318 hectares, and mesta on 530 hectares while the local varieties were cultivated on 878 hectares.
“I cultivated BR-28 variety earlier on one bigha land and later produced HYV kenaf variety on the same land. Everything was favourable for jute cultivation this season,” said Abdul Haq, a model farmer of Bishnupur village.
After harvesting jute, he will plant transplanted Aman seedlings on the same land.
