A bumper production of sugarcane planted in 2012-13 season is expected
at eight sub- zones of Rangpur Sugar Mills Limited (RSML) as the
plants of the sugarcane have grown well on the land.
According to sources, the mill located at Mohimaganj area under
Gobindaganj upazila and the only heavy industry in the district, had
been turned into a non profitable firm due to different reasons.
Though the mill went to sugar production every year, it was not
operated as per expected time for lack of supply of required quantity
of sugarcane from the mill zone areas causing losses for the mill for
years.
To run the mill properly and to turn it into a profitable firm in near
future, the authorities concerned took many initiatives including high
quality seed distribution, subsidy, and loan disbursement on easy
terms for the growers.
Besides, the officials and the staff of the mill conducted different
motivational and monitoring programmes to the farmers of the mill
zones during the plantation season to bring more land under sugarcane
farming to attain the cherished goal.
In response, about 5500 farmers of sub-zones areas of the mill have
cultivated sugarcane on 7,040 acres of land in 2012-2013 plantation
season and they are expecting bumper production.
Zinnat Ali Prodhan, president of sugarcane growers’association of the
mill, said favourable climatic condition, timely supply of high
quality seed, fertilizers, insecticides and other agri inputs and
proper disbursement of subsidy and agri loan to the growers are the
main reasons behind the expectation of bumper production.
General Manager (Agri) Aleek Shome said, the sugarcane were cultivated
on over 1500 acres of land more in 2012-13 plantation season in
comparison to previous season due to taking pragmatic measures by the
mill authority.
Talking to the BSS, managing director of the RSML Abdul Khaleque said
about 1,25,700 metric tons of yield might be produced and it would
have possibility to operate the mill for 85-90 days crushing 70,000
tonnes of sugarcane during the 2013-2014 crushing season. – BSS,
