Byelection schedule for Barguna-2 likely after Eid vacation

The Election Commission will announce the schedule for by-elections to Barguna-2 constituency immediately after the Eid-ul-Fitr vacation.   The parliamentary seat fell vacant following the tragic death of ruling Awami League lawmaker Golam Sabur Tulu in a road accident in Faridpur on July 26.
The EC secretariat has already received a notification in this regard from the parliament secretariat.
The announcement of by-election schedule will come after the updated electoral rolls of the constituency are prepared.
There is legal obligation for the commission to hold the by-election within 90 days after any parliamentary seat falls vacant, Election Commissioner Abu Hafiz said.
“The decision over announcement of the by-election schedule will be taken in the commission’s meeting immediately after Eid-ul Fitr vacation,” he said.
Article 123 (4) of the Constitution states: “An election to fill the seat of a member of Parliament which falls vacant otherwise than by reason of the dissolution of Parliament shall be held within ninety days of the occurrence of the vacancy.”
As per the constitutional provision, the Election Commission is obliged to arrange the by-polls by next October 23 as the current parliament is due to be dissolved on and after October 26. – UNB
