Call fresh polls in 6 months, let referendum show if people want it

Eminent jurist Barrister Rafique-ul-Huq has proposed an “Yes” or “No” vote to determine whether the majority of people were in favour of mid-term election or not as the incumbents were rejecting any suggestion for such election.
Former President Prof Dr AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury, on the other hand, demanded holding a midterm election within the next six months.
Prof Chowdhury was speaking as the chief guest and Barrister Huq as special guest at a meeting organised by Sammilito Peshajibi Parishad at Jatiya Press Club yesterday.“I want to give a proposal to hold a referendum whether a mid-term poll will be held or not as one side is demanding for mid-term poll and another side denying it. You will hold mid-term election if “Yes” wins, otherwise not,” said Barrister Huq.
He said it will not be good for anyone to engage in controversy and criticise each other till 2019.
Prof Chowdhury, also president of Bikalpa Dhara Bangladesh, lent his support to form a national government for temporarily comprising the lawmakers of the previous Parliament.
He made the suggestion following the publication of a reported proposal by diplomats to resolve the current political impasse to hold election under the President.
“This national government will be treated as neutral one; it will form an election commission, which will be acceptable to all. All parties should be allowed to take part in the poll under this government,” Chowdhury added.
The former President reminded that the incumbent government and those would come to power in future should understand that no government is permanent.
He said killing people by hurling petrol bombs cannot be treated as movement on the other hand extra judicial killing is nothing but killing of democracy.
The meeting was also addressed, among others, by BNP chairperson’s adviser Shawkat Mahmud, DAB president Prof Azizul Haque, EAB leader Akhter Hossain, and Ruhul Amin Gazi. – Staff Reporter
