Candidates with criminal cases face police action

Legal actions will be taken against the candidates facing criminal cases if they contest the Dhaka city corporation elections without securing bail, said a senior police official on Thursday.
“The law enforcers will take legal actions against the candidates who are accused in criminal cases and intend to participate in the election campaign without securing bail from court,” said Detective Branch (DB) Joint Commissioner Monirul Islam.Monirul, also spokesperson for Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), was addressing a press conference at the DMP Media Centre.
Actions will also be taken against the contestants who have records of terror activities in the past and about whom people still have a bad perception even if they are now on bail, he added.
The DMP spokesperson further said police will work for creating a congenial atmosphere for the elections to Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) slated for April 28.
He said the law enforcers will continue efforts to take measures so that 42 lakh voters can exercise freely their franchise at 1981 centres in 92 wards of the two DCCs.
Police will keep on watching the use of licensed arms during the polls, he added. – UNB
