Chattogram road crash kills 3

Chattogram, Feb 5 (UNB) :  At least three people were killed and four others injured as a truck collided head-on with a CNG-run auto-rickshaw in Chattogram city’s Bakolia on Friday.
The deceased were identified as auto-rickshaw driver Md Wahid Mia, 52, Md Shahid Mazi, 62, and Md Abdul Mannan, 40.
A sand-laden truck crashed into the auto-rickshaw at 12:15pm, killing the trio on the spot, said Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bakolia Police Station Md Moinuddin.
“Their bodies have been sent to hospital morgue for autopsy,” the OC said.
Bangladeshi road deaths
The country saw 439 road fatalities from 417 accidents in November 2020, according to Road Safety Foundation.
And 5,227 people died on Bangladeshi roads from 4,702 accidents in 2019, said Nirapad Sarak Chai.
The World Bank report “Delivering Road Safety in Bangladesh,” published in February 2020, said: “The country needs to invest an estimated extra $7.8 billion over the next decade to halve its road crash fatalities.”
“The high death rate on Bangladesh’s roads is caused by a chronic lack of investment in systemic, targeted, and sustained road safety programmes,” it said.
The annual road crash deaths per capita in Bangladesh are twice the average rate for high-income countries and five times that of the best-performing countries in the world, it added.
Children and the working-age population were most affected by road crash injuries in Bangladesh, the World Bank report said.
