Russia’s nuclear power company- ASE, a subsidiary of state nuclear energy corporation- Rosatom organised a special event titled ‘Children and Atom’ at the Nuclear Industry Information Centre (NIIC) of Novotheater in the city yesterday, March 28, 2016 in observance of the Independence Day of Bangladesh. Children Art Competition, Photo Exhibition Unveiling of Bangla Booklet for children on nuclear energy were the main components of the event. The event was held with the support from Ministry of Science and Technology, Govt. of Bangladesh, Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission( BAEC), Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Novotheater, Dhaka.
Maksim Elchishchev, Vice President of ASE for Bangladesh project in his recorded video speech said, “The future of nuclear energy is in the hands of today’s children. Many of them will take part in operation and even set up of nuclear power plants tomorrow. Interest in nuclear science to be generated in them from the very childhood.”
“Through the paintings the children will be able to visualise their dream about future Bangladesh. The Bangla booklet will enable them to know and better understand the the sophisticated nuclear science and technoology.” he added.
He further informed that the books to be distributed among the school children in Dhaka, Pabna and Ishwardi.
Rosatom Representative in Bangladesh Philip Kosov said, “The book will enhance interest in nuclear science among the children and at the same time will inspire many of them to become nuclear specialists in future.”
Syed Monjurul Haque, Member Engineering of BAEC said, “We expect to receive the first Gigawatt of nuclear power from Rooppur project by 2021. This project gives us entrance to hi-tech world of nuclear power and will play significant role in country’s socio-economic development.”
The event was also addressed by Alexander Demin, Director of Russian Cultural Centre in Dhaka and Abul Basher Md. Zahurul Islam, Director General of Novotheatre among others.
69 child artistes from various schools of Dhaka city participated in the art contest. Renowned artistes Samarjit Roy Chowdhury, Abul Barq Alvi and Sheikh Rokonuzzaman did the judgement. Kismah Syera of Banani Southpoint School was adjudged winner of the contest, while Jannatul Mawa of Banani Biddyaniketan and Jannatul Arbi riya of Tikatuli Quamrunnesa Govt. Girls School secured second and third position.
The Bangla booklet titled “Poromanu Path “has been designed to give basic idea on nuclear science and technology to children through easy language and illustration.”
More than 70 photos on nuclear power plant, fuel and diversified usage of nuclear power are displayed at the photo exhibition.
It maybe noted here that the first ever nuclear power plant in Bangladesh is being set up at Rooppur of Pabna district with the cooperation form Russia. The plant will have two units, each of 1,200 Mw capacity. World’s latest and safest VVER 1200 technology to be used at the Rooppur project.
