Dhaka, July 13 – China has said it will continue to host trilateral meetings with Bangladesh and Myanmar providing a platform for dialogue to promote early return of Rohingyas to Rakhine in Myanmar from Cox’s Bazar.China will also offer its support in creating “secure and conducive conditions” for the return of Rohingyas to help make the repatriation process sustainable.
The Chinese leadership conveyed it to Bangladesh during Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s visit to China, said an official quoting an official document.
Sheikh Hasina paid an official visit to China from July 1-6 at the invitation of Chinese Premier Li Keqiang. She also attended the 13th Summer Davos Forum in Dalian.
During the visit, Bangladesh and China agreed that properly resolving the issue involving Rakhine State will contribute to the peace and stability of the region.
Both sides agreed that the solution to this issue lies in the early, safe and dignified return to Myanmar of the displaced people who have entered Bangladesh from Rakhine.
The Chinese side encourages Myanmar and Bangladesh to realise the early repatriation of the displaced people to Myanmar through consultation.
Bangladesh is currently hosting 1.2 million Rohingyas in Cox’s Bazar district, most of them entered Bangladesh since August 25, 2017.
On July 3, UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar Yanghee Lee implored the international community to maintain pressure on Myanmar amid deterioration of human rights in the country.
Lee said Rohingyas in Cox’s Bazar are being subjected to a human rights crisis, responsibility for which lies with Myanmar.
“It’s entirely Myanmar’s responsibility to bring about all necessary conditions for all the people they forcibly drove out to return and they are entirely failing to do so,” she was quoted as saying in a statement received from Geneva. – UNB
