Chittagong clothing factory workers lock up manager, demonstrate for unpaid salary

Workers of a readymade garment factory in Chittagong have demonstrated seeking payment of their outstanding salaries and allowances and locked up the factory manager for hours.The protest took place at the ‘Masud Fabrics’ factory in the city’s Andarkilla on Monday morning, said industrial police’s Inspector Arifur Rahman.He said Manager Sukumar Chowdhury was kept in confinement since the morning until police went there around 12pm and secured his release.The workers let him go after they were promised that the factory management would take immediate measures to pay their dues.Later, factory officials sat with BGMEA representatives to reach an understanding with the workers, said Rahman.“BGMEA’s representatives are here. The owner too has been asked to come to the factory. Decisions will be taken about the payment of outstanding salaries and wages in the meeting.”Quoting the agitating workers, the police inspector told bdnews24.com that the factory was yet to give them the overtime and other allowances since May and salaries of June.Rahman said the workers had locked up the manager inside the factory on Sunday night too. They released him after the management assured them of clearing the dues on Monday.But when the factory owner Kamal Uddin did not show up in the morning to make the payments, the workers detained Chowdhury again and started demonstrating.The police officer said they went to the factory and took the situation under control.bdnews24.com
