Circular bus service opens in Dhaka’s posh Dhanmondi areas

Dhaka, Mar 27 (UNB) – A circular bus service has been introduced on Dhanmondi-New Market-Azimpur route, aiming to bring back traffic discipline on the city streets.  

Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Sayeed Khokon inaugurated the service at Kalabagan on Wednesday.

Primarily, 20-25 air-conditioned buses will ply the routes. Later, the number will be raised considering the demand.

The buses will take and drop passengers from and at 36 points on a circular route. There will be fixed ticket counters. Passenger will have to collect tickets maintaining discipline. The lowest fare is Tk 10, from the first stop to the second one, while the highest fare is Tk 30.

DNCC mayor Atikul Islam, DMP commissioner Asaduzzaman Miah and Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC) chairman Md Farid Ahmed Bhuiyan were also present.

Besides, BRTC today (Wednesday) introduced 4 double-decker buses on Airport, Kuril, Rampura and Gulistan routes.

The service was inaugurated at a programme presided over by Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Atiqul Islam  at Airport Gol Chattor intersection police box area around 1pm.

Primarily four buses will run on this route. Besides, 20 buses will be added to the fleet within two weeks.

After the accident on March 19, the mayor said, the route permits of Jabal-e-Noor and Supravat Paribahan were cancelled. To end the hassles of general people and students and as part of ensuring safe roads, the bus services have been inaugurated following the instruction of the Prime Minister.

The mayor said a circular bus route will be inaugurated for Uttara, too.

Besides, plans have been taken to build footbridges, make zebra crossings and underpasses to ensure safe roads. The plans will be implemented as soon as possible, he added.

Atiqul Islam sought cooperation from all in bringing back discipline on the roads.

DSCC mayor Sayeed Khokon and Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Asaduzzaman Miah were also present at the programme.
