Government is introducing a ‘content filtering’ mechanism to prevent spreading of rumour and propaganda in social networking sites.
Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology (ICT) Minister Mustafa Jabbar said this on Monday while talking to reporters after inaugurating the ‘International Telecommunication Union (ITU) BTRC Asia-Pacific Regulators Roundtable-2018’ at a hotel in the city.
“Currently we don’t have any filtering mechanism in Facebook. Though we’ve good contacts with Facebook, it doesn’t carry out all our requests, some it does,” said the minister.
Asked when the ‘content filtering’ project will be completed, the minister said the move was there for long but, “now we’ve to do it taking views of all stakeholders.”
“The government can take various steps including suspension of internet service for ensuring safety of the state,” said the minister.
Replying to a question about spreading rumour in the Facebook, Mustafa Jabbar, said “We have no option of filtering as Facebook maintained the community standard according to the American law.”
International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and Asia Pacific Telecommunity (APT) took the initiatives and Posts and Telecommunications Division and BTRC jointly organised the roundtable.
Telecommunications Division Secretary Shyam Sundar Sikdar, Ioane Koroivuki , Regional Director of International Telecommunication Union (ITU), Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific and acting Chairman of BTRC Md Jahurul Haque addressed the roundtable.
Some 130 representatives from Asia-Pacific region, operators and telecom representatives and ICT specialists participated in the two day ITU-BTRC Asia-Pacific Regulator Roundtable 2018.
The roundtable will discuss on the digital transformation, eco-system for digital economy, barriers of digital connectivity development and its solution, broadband services, legal and regulatory framework for the safety of the data of customers.
