Controversy over JU dean appointments

Savar (Dhaka), March 15 – A faction of pro-AL teachers of Jahangirnagar University (JU) protested the new dean appointments at Social Sciences and Law faculties on Thursday.Alleging the violation of university tradition, the former VC Shariff Enamul Kabir loyalists, under the banner of ‘Bangabandhur Adarsho o Muktijuddher Chetonay Bishwasi Pragotishil Shikkhak Shamaj’, stipulated a time of 24 hours to abolish the appointments.
The protest came from a press meet, held at the Teachers’ Lounge of Social Sciences building at about 12:00pm, after the authorities appointed Prof Dr. Rasheda Akhter of Anthropology and Prof Bashir Ahmed of Gov’t and Politics departments as the Acting Deans of Social Sciences and Law faculties Wednesday evening.
The duo replaced Prof Dr. Amir Hussain and Prof Sheikh Monzurul Huq, who have also been serving as the Pro-VC and treasurer of the university respectively from last year.
These professors were in service as the admission procedures continued. And they have been exempted following the admission procedure’s completion, said the appointment notice.
At the conference, spokesman of the organization pro-VC Prof Dr. Abul Hossain alleged that, the VC appointed new deans though the admission procedures are yet to be closed. She could have called Prof Amir Hussain, the elected dean, to resign rather than exempting. She broke the tradition in appointment.
He also alleged of holding the upgrading process of an Asst. Prof Robiul Islam of Law department. So that he can’t be appointed dean of Law faculty.
However contacted, VC Prof Dr. Farzana Islam said: ‘The important works of the admission procedure and meeting of the central admission committee have already finished’.
‘Pro-VC Prof Dr. Amir Hussain was exempted from the post of Social Sciences faculty dean, was not fired.
Moreover, I called both the pro-VC and treasurer Wednesday evening and thanked over their service’, she added.
About the allegation of holding upgrading process, she said: ‘He did not fulfill the required duration to be eligible for upgrading to Assoc. Prof due to his study leave. His study leave wasn’t counted as the active service’.
However, he will be upgraded to Assoc. prof in the next syndicate meeting, Dr. Farzana added. – JU Correspondent
