Core Catcher of Unit 2 of Rooppur NPP ready for installation

Dhaka, April 02 – The reinforced frame, weighing 58 tons, and the embedded part of the core catcher (core meltdown retention device), weighing 7.5 tons, have been installed at Unit 2 of Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant in Pabna.
“In the nearest future, our experts will proceed with installation of the core catcher -a unique device developed by Russian nuclear engineers and one of the main passive safety systems of Rooppur NPP”, informed Sergey Lastochkin, Vice President, Atomstroyexport (ASE) and Project Director, Rooppur NPP Construction.
Active construction phase of Unit 2 started on July 14, 2018 with the pouring of first concrete at the foundation base of reactor, while the First Concrete ceremony of Unit 1 was held on November 30, 2017.
Installation works for Core Catcher at the Unit1 started on August 18, 2018. Presently construction of main buildings and other structures of Units 1 and 2 are in progress.
So far all works are running on schedule. Under the General Contract signed on December 25,2015 ASE (Atomstroyexport), Engineering Division of Rosatom State Corporation of Russia is implementing the project. Rooppur NPP will have two VVER 1200 reactors, each with a capacity of 1,200 MW.
