Dhaka, Dec 17 – Bangladesh’s Covid-19 fatalities rose to 7,192 on Thursday morning, with reports of 36 more deaths in 24 hours, the health authorities said.
The mortality rate now stands at 1.45%, according to the Directorate General of Health Services.
Besides, some 1,134 new Covid-19 cases were reported until Thursday morning, taking the country’s caseload to 496,975. So far, 431,590 patients – 86.84% – including 2,239 ones in the last 24 hours, have recovered.
Bangladesh reported its first cases on March 8. The infection number reached the 300,000-mark on August 26. The first death was reported on March 18 and the death toll exceeded 7,000 on December 12.
Until now, 3,035,728 tests have been carried out, including 13,191 new ones. So far, 16.37% of the tests turned out to be positive.
Bangladesh is seeing 2,918.12 infections, 2,534.20 recoveries, and 42.23 deaths per million.
Global situation
More than 74.3 million people have been infected with coronavirus globally and over 1.65 million of them died since the first cases were reported in December last year, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University (JHU).
The global caseload stood at 74,325,035 with 1,651,150 fatalities on Thursday.
In the United States, the total number of Covid-19 cases topped 16.9 million according to the Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) at JHU.
The US case count rose to 16,980,842, with 307,512 deaths as of Thursday morning.
In neighbouring India, the Covid-19 tally reached 9,956,557, while the country’s death toll surged to 144,451.
Countries with more than 1.8 million cases also included Russia, France, Turkey, Britain and Italy. And the countries with over 52,000 deaths included India, Mexico, Italy, Britain, France and Iran.
Global cases hit 70 million on December 11. It took only five days for the global caseload to jump from 70 million to 74 million.
The US, which accounted for more than 22% of the global cases, reported 3,019 deaths on Tuesday, the third-highest daily toll since the pandemic began.
