The ‘Save Sundarbans March’ which was launched by Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) and Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal (BSD) on October 13 aiming to raise awareness against all environmentally destructive activities in the world’s largest mangrove forest, will be ended in Bagerhat town on Saturday.
The march will be concluded through a rally to be held at Old Court Premises in the district town. Various programmes have been taken here to make the programme a success.The march of the protesters which started with a rally in front of the National Press Club in the city on October 13 will reach Bagerhat district after visiting Manikganj, Faridpur, Jhenidah, Jessore and Khulna districts.
The protesters said the government’s move to set up coal-fired power plant and Orion Group’s power stations near the Sundarbans will affect the mangrove forest destroying its environment, ecosystem and biodiversity. Besides, people who have been residing in the area will be affected by different diseases, including cancer.
The people of the country do not want the coal-fired base power plant and the government has no right to implement these projects without the consent of the people, they said.
CPB has taken various preparations, including street meeting, leaflet distribution and campaigning in different educational institutions in the district to make their programme a success, said Farrukh Hasan Jewel, general secretary of Bagerhat unit CPB.
Besides, they will also announce a greater movement from the rally scheduled to be held on Saturday, he said.
The proposed 1320-megawatt Rampal power plant project, on an area of over 1834 acres of land, is situated 14 kilometres north off the world’s largest mangrove forest Sundarbans, which is a Unesco world heritage site. – Unb
