Crimes mark a sharp rise for law-and-order downslide: BNP

Dhaka, July 6 (UNB) – BNP on Saturday alleged that the incidents of killing, rape and other social crimes marked a sharp rise due to serious slide in law-and-order situation.

“They (govt) have created an anarchic situation across the country and the law-and-order situation extremely deteriorated. Now we see people being stabbed to death in broad daylight,” said BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.

Speaking at a human-chain programme, he further said, “The incidents of rape, dacoity and plundering are growing while people have no security of their lives due to the deteriorating law-and-order situation.”

Referring to newspaper reports, the BNP leader also said 12 people are killed every hour on average either in road accident or other killing incidents.

BNP’s Dhaka south city unit arranged the programme in front of the Jatiya Press Club demanding the release of its Chairperson Khaleda Zia and party leader Habib-un-Nabi Khan Sohel.

Fakhrul said the entire country has now turned into a prison while people are not getting justice from the judiciary. “The judiciary has completely gone under the control of Awami League.”

He said their party has got disappointed and aggrieved over a Pabna court verdict delivered on Wednesday sentencing nine BNP men to death and 25 others to life in connection with “Awami League’s planned’ attack on a train carrying its president Sheikh Hasina 24 years ago. “I think there can be no such verdict in any civilised society”

The BNP leader also accused the government of snatching the press freedom. “We want to restore democracy and the democratic governing system for which we waged the Liberation War in 1971.”

He alleged that the government is indulging in mega ‘corruption’ in the name of mega project while banks are getting depleted due to widespread plundering.

Fakhrul said the government has increased the gas tariff only to facilitate those who import Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG). “The left parties will enforce a hartal against it tomorrow (Sunday), and our party has decide to support it.”

He alleged that the government has kept their chairperson Khaleda Zia in jail by unfairly depriving her from getting bail. “We want her to be released on bail legally as she deserves it.”
